Lemon balm is an amazing perennial herb which is part of the mint family, sometimes also known as lemon mint. Lemon balm has to be at the top of the list for citrus tasting herbs. Not only is Lemon Balm relatively easy to grow, it has a fresh summery lemon flavour without the tanginess and works great cooked in a meal or brewed as a tea as well. Lemon balm grows into a lush green bush about 2 feet tall, and can be grown successfully in a pot or in the ground.
Lemon balm has great medicinal properties, and it has been used from ancient times as an anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Lemon balm can be used during stress full days as a tea at night to help relax. Lemon Balm’s other short term/long term benefits including improving alertness, strengthening your brain power, improves digestion, supports liver functions, improves skin health and relives sore muscles. Lemon can also be used as a mosquito repellent by rubbing it on your skin (as it contains citronella essential oil).
And finally the bees love the pale pinkish white flowers during the hotter months of the year.
